A first for underground graphics, we produced and installed strawberry scented posters throughout Oxford Circus Underground Station as part of the launch campaign for Beefeater Pink Gin. The immersive Oxford Circus Out-ofHome ‘exit domination’ campaign took customers on a sensory brand experience as they left the station. The activation included four strawberry-scented exit corridors and a vinyl wrapped escalator. Data mapping identified Oxford Circus Underground Station as the highest footfall station of the target audience, and in close proximity to establishments serving the new strawberry flavoured gin. It was the perfect location for the brand. Philip Ainsworth, Marketing Director for Pernod Ricard UK, said: “Distilled in London, Beefeater Pink represents the spirit of the city where convention and modernity coexist, so a London Underground OOH domination made complete sense. Our main target is young millennials aged 20-27 and we want our marketing to be playful, fresh and as disruptive as possible. The first ever scented London Underground campaign met this brief perfectly.” Richard Simkins, Creative Solutions Director at Exterion Media, said: “We’re thrilled that Pernod Ricard are the first brand to try out our new scented posters on London Underground. We’re constantly working on the research and development of new products to launch across our estate, to deliver standout brand moments and enhance customer experiences.” The new advertising technique was specifically designed by our in house team to meet the needs for the Beefeater Pink campaign. Combining digital and screen print processes, we collaborated with Aromaco, a specialist scent company to use a ‘pure capsule aroma’ and a water-based UV coating to infuse scented varnish into a dry-posted poster. Traditionally the scent is activated when rubbed, however to adhere to underground regulations the scent was screen printed multiple times across the graphics to ensure the scent was powerful enough without interaction.
